Harrison was assasinated in his home six months after taking office. The body of Mayor Carter Harrison found lying on the floor of his living room. The most successful political figure in the city's history, he was serving his fifth term as chief executive (1879, 1881, 1883, 1885, 1893) and there were those who saw in him a future president. Besides his unprecedented achievements as a political figure, Harrison was also an affluent businessman, and he owned a number of enterprises including The Chicago Times.
